Responsibilities:
Plan and coordinate the activities of the 35
member Santa Barbara County Child Care Planning
Council (the Council) to fulfill all mandates of
the California Department of Education and to
accomplish the local goals of the Council.
Oversee the execution of all legislative
requirements including conducting a countywide
child care needs assessment, developing countywide
priorities for subsidized child care services and
preparing a countywide plan for early care and
education.
Coordinate the activities of the Council, its
committees and work groups to achieve the goals and
objectives set forth in the "Santa Barbara County
Strategic Plan for Early Care and Education" and
oversee the development and implementation of other
projects.
Serve as a vital link between the 35 member
Council and the Santa Barbara County Office of
Early Care and Education, the Santa Barbara County
Children and Families Commission and other local
institutions to fulfill the goals of the
Council.
Serve as a liaison between the Council and the
California Department of Education. Prepare
reports, collect data and respond to requests for
documentation and information from the State
Department of Education. Anticipate and respond to
new initiatives and legislation from the California
Department of Education for local child care
planning councils.
Attend and report on local, state, and/or
federally sponsored meetings, workshops, and
conferences relative to the ongoing activities of
the Council. Represent the Council as needed.
Promote positive public awareness of child care
and related issues. Write press releases, special
reports, and informational brochures on behalf of
the Council, and participate in activities that
inform and educate the whole community.
Background:
Valerie has been involved in early care
and education as a teacher, researcher and
administrator in Massachusetts, New
Mexico, Illinois and California.
Her first contact with the Santa
Barbara County Child Care Planning Council
was as a grant writer, and to assist with
the completion of the first Santa Barbara
County Strategic Plan for Early Care and
Education in 2000.
She has been employed as the Council
Coordinator for 6 years.
