Child Care Coordinator,
Redwood City,
California
Responsibilities:
The City Child Care Coordinator is responsible
for developing child care resources in both the
public and private sectors, providing technical
assistance to center-based and family child care
home providers, promoting public awareness of child
care issues, acting as public/private sector
liaison, and generating grant proposals for
funding. Working with the community, city planners,
school district and other agencies, she has
facilitated increases in both quantity and quality
of child care and preschool programs. Over the
years, an additional $1M + of annual state/federal
subsidy funds have been captured.
The Coordinator participates in several
countywide activities and organizations, including
membership on the Child Care Partnership Council
(LPC) of San Mateo County. She currently assists
the San Mateo County Office of Education with
implementation, in Redwood City, of its Preschool
for All demonstration program that began in Spring
2005.

Kristen Anderson has
been Redwood City's Child Care
Coordinator for 20 years. Additionally,
she has worked for the Child Care
Coordinating Council (R&R) on various
projects including the Local Investment in
Child Care Project (LINCC).
As a consultant, she has assisted other
cities and counties to develop or revise
child care policies and
strategies. Her book, Planning for
Child Care in California (Solano Press
Books, 2006) provides strategies,
examples, and resources to assist local
officials, planners, and child
advocates.
In previous lives, Kristen taught at
Mills College and in preschool/child care
for ten years. She holds a PhD in Early
Education and Child Development (Stanford
University, 1981).
